Silly Human… ChatGPT and Me

I spend a lot of time evaluating, reviewing and applying. data analytics, machine learning and AI technologies. So it’s not hard to believe then that OpenAI’s GPT-3 has been on my radar since its release in 2020. ChatGPT, released recently, is a variant of GPT-3 trained to be conversant like many of the chat bots that have been commercially available for over a decade.

As I observed the buzz created by ChatGPT I thought back to the dawn of personal computing. In those early days the PC was primarily aimed at hobbyists and it was difficult for the average person to perceive the utility that the computer would ultimately provide. That was until 1979 when Dan Bricklin created VisiCalc.

Visicalc, the first spreadsheet application quickly demonstrated the utility of the personal computer. At first just to accounting and finance. professionals, but in rather short time, millions realized that a PC armed with VisiCalc would support dozens of use cases and increase productivity ay work and at home. It would later be known to as the first killer app of the PC revolution.

A single software product sold quite a few personal computers over the next 5 to 7 years, and gave birth to a number of competitors like Lotus 123, Multiplan and later Excel

And so I wonder is chatGPT the VisiCalc moment for AI? What was an abstraction: AI and…
